Director of Illawarra Sexual Health Service & Clinical Director Population Health Southern Network, SESIAHS. Specialist in sexual health medicine since 1994. Past president of the RACP Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine. Interest in medical education includes the development of online CPD activities for GPs and online university courses.

Dr Devora Lieberman

Sex Selection in Pregnancy

Dr Devora Lieberman

Dr Lieberman is Director of Sydney IVF's Miscarriage Management Program and has an active infertility practice. She joined Sydney IVF in 2003 after several years working as an Associate Medical Director, Women's Health at Organon Australia, a pharmaceutical company where she was responsible for the company's contraception, HRT and profertility products. In this role, Devora was involved in the Australian introduction of a pen device for follicle-stimulating hormone delivery and educated fertility doctors about a new type of stimulation regimen using gonadotrophin-releasing hormone antagonists.

Dr Deborah Bateson

Dr Deborah Bateson is the Medical Director at Family Planning NSW and divides her time between research, clinical work and education. Her current research interests include new contraceptive regimens, communication in sexual and reproductive health consultations and an HPV genotyping study.

Sex and the Elderly

Dr Lesley Yee

Dr Lesley Yee currently works as a sexual health physician at the Australian Centre for Sexual Health. Dr Yee completed her medical degree and graduated with honours from Sydney University in 1978. She started her professional life working as a GP for 10 years and then moved into the area of medical sexual therapy with FPNSW and in private practice. She completed a Masters in Medicine in Psychotherapy in 1999.

Dr Ellie Freedman

Discussion Chair: Dr Ellie Freedman

Dr Freedman is a sexual health physician with an interest in Medical Education. Her clinical areas of expertise include HIV management, Contraception and Sexual Assault. In addition to work at FPNSW coordinating the Medical Education Program, she works as a VMO at Parramatta Sexual Health Clinic and is associate clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney. She is interested in particular in the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Women living with HIV.


Dr Juliet Richters

Associate Professor Juliet Richters

Dr Richters has worked for over 20 years in sexual health research. She has done national surveys of sexual behaviour and attitudes, in-depth interview studies, and theoretical work. Topics include family planning and condom use, circumcision, casual sex, oral sex, esoteric sexual practices, and understandings of sexually transmissible infections.


Dr Melissa Kang

Dr Melissa Kang

Melissa trained in general practice and has worked exclusively in youth health since 1993. She is involved in training a wide range of health and education professionals in adolescent health, has developed postgraduate courses in adolescent sexuality and conducted research among young people in sexuality, sexual health, and access to primary health care. She works as a senior lecturer in the department of General Practice at the University of Sydney and is a consultant for the NSW Centre for the Advancement of Adolescent Health.

Liz Hammond

Liz is the Manager Health Promotion at Family Planning NSW. She has worked in the education and health sectors from the 1980s. Since the 90s Liz has worked specifically with young people in the areas of sexual assault, reproductive & sexual health and mental health. Her current research interests involve young people and oral sex; she is the chief investigator for FPNSW Hook us up on your hook-ups - The low down on "going down": oral sex and young people on-line survey.

Elizabeth is the Senior Case Manager of the Gender Centre. Elizabeth has worked for 23 years in welfare services. Three and a half of these years working with Transgender community. Elizabeth is currently undertaking post graduate research of Transgender Issues.

Unplanned Pregnancy

Dr Christine Read

Dr Read is a sexual health physician with a particular interest in menopause and is a council member of the Australasian Menopause Society. She is committed to providing better reproductive and sexual health care to rural and Aboriginal women and has managed a number of innovative projects to address the lack of services and information for these women. Dr Read is an investigator for a number of research projects including a national HPV genotyping study and has written books on medical topics for lay audiences. Titles include Depression, Lifting the Cloud, When Love Hurts and Doctor, I'm Tired.

Dr Michael Lowy

Dr Lowy is a men's health physician with a special interest in male sexual dysfunction, relationship counselling and the general health issues of men. He began his medical career in general practice; he became a sexual health physician in 1996 and obtained a Masters in Psychological Medicine in 2001. He is currently a director of Sydney Men's Health in Bondi Junction.

Dr Rosie King

Dr Rosie King

Dr King is a sexual health physician. She graduated from the medical faculty at the University of New South Wales in 1976, and worked in general medical practice for 10 years before specialising in sexual medicine. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in the Sexual Health Medicine Chapter and has had over 30 years of clinical experience.
