Research volunteers wanted to help develop a new male contraceptive

The Andrology Department of Concord Hospital is seeking couples to participate in an important international research study for the development of a male hormonal method of contraception.

The overall purpose of this research is to develop a safe, effective, reversible and practical method of male contraception. At present, there are no hormonal male contraceptives on the market anywhere in the world.

This particular study will test a combination of hormones. It will be judged by whether the treatment prevents pregnancy by decreasing your sperm count in a way that is fully reversed when treatment stops.

We will also watch for any side effects checking especially for any serious ones, and want to know how you like this treatment as a potential future contraceptive method.

The Andrology Department at Concord Hospital conducted the world's first study to prove that a combination of 2 hormones like those in this study worked reliably as a contraceptive by switching off sperm production.

This study, funded by the World Health Organisation, is only the second ever hormonal male contraceptive study using two hormones in combination to prevent pregnancy.  No other centres in the world have more experience in male hormonal contraceptive studies where the goal is to prevent pregnancy.

The study has been approved by the Concord Hospital Ethics Committee and the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
