Course Aim
This course is designed to prepare registered nurses/midwives to function in an extended clinical role as a practitioner in the specialty of sexual and reproductive health
Areas of practice for past participants include family planning, sexual health, HIV/AIDS, Women’s Health, Drug and Alcohol, Gynaecology, Midwifery, Youth, Corrective Services, Practice Nurses and more.

General Course Objectives
Module 1 - Theory
- Inform the participant of the current knowledge and issues, research and debate in the sphere of sexual and reproductive health
- Provide an environment where participants can critically discuss the issues of sexual and reproductive health in terms of client need, health outcomes, service provision, legal and ethical boundaries and professional nursing practice
- Provide opportunities for participation in exercises and activities that prepare participants for their clinical role
- Provide participants with the framework to assist with the integration of theory into clinical practice
- Create an environment where participants reflect on and are challenged in their personal belief system
Module 2 - Clinical
- Provide the opportunity for the observation of the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services in Family Planning NSW and other health establishments
- Provide a supportive learning environment in which participants can under supervision implement the theory and skills acquired in Module 1 into clinical practice
- Enable participants to integrate theory into practice through simulations, observation, practice and modelling of experienced nursing and medical practitioners
- Enable the participant to work as a member of a team in collaboration with medical practitioners and other health professionals
- Promote reflective practice through the use of journals and self appraisal
- Act as an agent of change in the workplace and in the health system

Revision of relevant anatomy and physiology for sexual and reproductive health
Module 1 - Theory
Distance Education
- Guided Learning Package - 4 months
- 3-day Interactive Workshop
Module 2 - Clinical
- 50 hrs supervised clinical experience in Family Planning NSW clinics
- 5 hour observational visit at a centre providing pregnancy counselling and termination
- 5 hour Sexual Health Services Activity

If you are applying for the Certificate Course, you must include a covering letter with your application form.
Registration for all certificate courses close approx. 4 weeks prior to commencement. A minimum number of participants is required for courses to proceed. A maximum of 16 applications will be accepted per intake.
This Family Planning NSW Certificate in Sexual & Reproductive Health (Nursing) Course has been accredited by Royal College of Nursing Australia, according to approved criteria.
Completion attracts 165 RCNA Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) points as part of RCNA's Life Long Learning Program (3LP).

Fees and Cancellation policy
Please note that Family Planning NSW reserves the right to alter course fees without prior notice.
Cancellation up to two weeks prior to training date or from receiving course material will incur a cancellation fee of 10% of the training fee quoted.
Cancellation less than two weeks prior to the training date or from receiving course material will incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the training fee quoted.
Cancellation on the day of training will incur a 100% payment of training fee quoted.
If it is necessary for Family Planning NSW to cancel a course, participants will be notified two weeks before the commencement of the course.
