FAQs

Question

How soon after sex is a pregnancy test accurate?

Answer

Some of the pregnancy test kits will tell you that you can do a pregnancy test 7-10 days after you think you may have conceived. This may give an accurate result, but it may not as there may be not enough of the pregnancy hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (BHCG) in the urine to show up in the test.

Our guidelines say that it is preferable that a woman be seven days overdue for her period before a test is done.

Most over-the-counter urine pregnancy tests are very accurate because they can detect very small amounts of this pregnancy hormone. Early morning specimens are best as the urine is most concentrated.

If the test is negative, and there is still no period, repeat the test in one week.

Blood tests offer little advantage over sensitive urine tests except in special circumstances, when it is necessary to know if the hormones levels are rising or falling over a number of days, for example if an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in the fallopian tube) is suspected.

As soon as you find out you're pregnant, it's a good idea to visit your doctor.
