Course description

Are you responsible for wellbeing or sexual health education at your school?

Are you interested in holistic approaches to support learning from Stages 1 to 3?

Do you need ideas for updating your units of work?

Looking for strategies to answer tricky questions from students?

Looking for ways to talk about sexuality with parents and carers?

This one day course is designed for school teachers and others who work with primary school children. The course examines the values and attitudes that underpin education in reproductive and sexual health, enabling participants to experience practical teaching and learning strategies to implement in the classroom to engage students. Participants will reflect on current programs and practice to improve their confidence and skills in teaching reproductive and sexual health.

Topics include:

  • Best practice approaches to sexual health education
  • Exploring values and attitudes
  • Talking with parents and carers
  • Healthy relationships
  • Bodies and how we change
  • Putting it all into practice and answering challenging questions
  • Recommended resources for teachers and students

Activities are aligned with the NSW PDHPE syllabus. Completing this course will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD.

This course may also be presented as a series of one or more shorter sessions to meet the needs of schools or regional groups when delivered as an external request.

Who should attend?

Primary school teachers and executives, pre-service teachers, casual teachers and others who work with primary school students, particularly those delivering sexual health education or in a wellbeing role.

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Prior training and experience working with students in Kindergarten to Year 6 or currently working towards a qualification to do so.

Participants are provided with a workbook, which includes a list of references and resources for teachers and students.

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who attend the whole day will receive a Statement of Attendance.

Completing this course will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing standard descriptors 1.2.2, 1.4.2, 1.6.2, 2.1.2, 2.3.2, 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.5.2, 3.7.2, 4.1.2, 4.3.2, and 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
