Course description

Are you a doctor, nurse or midwife who offers cervical screening as part of your scope of practice? Update and enhance your knowledge, technique and confidence in cervical screening with this blended learning course comprising online learning and clinical practice workshop led by Family Planning NSW clinicians.

Content includes:

  • Updates on the National Cervical Screening Guidelines, including the difference between a Pap test and Cervical Screening
  • Human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer
  • Communication and history taking skills, and providing comfortable screening experience for clients during cervical screening consultations
  • Taking samples
  • Case studies, including working with clients with special needs
  • Practise cervical screening on pelvic models
  • Simulated practice on practice patients

Who should attend?

Doctors, nurses and midwives who are required to provide cervical screening.

Course structure

It is essential participants complete the required activities before attending the workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.

Participants have access to the online learning 2 weeks before the workshop.

Pre-workshop activities

  • Completion of online learning which includes: pre-reading, activities, case studies and videos.
  • This learning will take approximately 3 hours to complete.

Face-to-Face Workshop

4 hour workshop

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

Experience in cervical screening, genital examination and speculum insertion are desirable.

Adequate professional indemnity insurance is required and is the sole responsibility of the participant.

Course cost

This course is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. There are no course fees for health care professionals working in NSW.

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who attend the workshop and successfully complete the assessment requirements will be issued with a Statement of Completion.

  

RACGP Activity Number 119450, this activity is accredited for 9 Category 2 points, as part of the RACGP Quality Improvement & Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program in the 2017-2019 Triennium.

       

ACRRM Activity number 11421, this activity is accredited for 10 PRPD points + 10 O&G MOPS points.

This course is equivalent to 6 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
