Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Insertion and Removal Training - Online Assessment

Course description

Learn or refresh your knowledge about the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT and the skills to safely insert and remove the device. This combination of online self-paced learning and supervised hands on training is suitable both as an introduction for new inserters or a refresher.

Content includes:

  • Contraceptive options and their efficacy
  • Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) including contraceptive implants 
  • Pharmacokinetics of Implanon NXT
  • Indications and contraindications
  • Initiation of the contraceptive implant including client consultation, administration of local anaesthetic and the safe insertion and removal of the implant in a primary care setting
  • Management of common side effects

Following the successful completion of the course, participants must ensure they have adequate professional indemnity insurance to implement Implanon NXT insertion and removal into their scope of practice.

Doctors, registered nurses and midwives. 

Course structure

Pre-workshop activities

Completion of online learning (3-4 hours) is essential prior to undertaking the practise and assessment component of the course.

Supervised practise and assessment

Participants will be provided with a training kit for practise and assessment purposes.

Participants practise insertion and removal of Implanon NXT on a model arm under the supervision of a Family Planning Australia clinical facilitator in an interactive online setting, followed by a competency assessment.

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Online Workshops

Online workshops are available to participants Australia-wide, however rural and regional NSW participants will be prioritised during periods of limited availability. The following LHDs are classified as rural and regional:

 

Participants are required to provide their own syringes, forceps, scalpel for the live demonstration and assessment. Access to a suitable device with webcam, headset or speakers, microphone and adequate internet access are also required. 

Participants must return their training kit to Family Planning Australia (return postage bag provided) before a Statement of Completion will be issued. 

Assessment

The assessment requirements include satisfactory completion of online learning, and successful completion of the competency assessment.

Please note:

It is a requirement of this course to have completed the online learning components prior to your supervised practise and assessment slot.

Participants who have not completed the entirety of the online learning at least 1 working day prior to their supervised practise and assessment slot, will be required to reschedule at the personal cost.

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who attend the whole training and successfully complete the assessment will be issued with a Statement of Completion.
