Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT®) Insertion and Removal Training for Healthcare Professionals

Who would benefit from this course

Medical practitioners including GPs and GP Registrars.

Nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives (with experience in local anaesthetic administration and contraceptive counselling). Nurses are required to fill in this eligibility questionnaire before applying for this course.

Course description

This 1.5 hour face to face session aims to enable participants to safely insert and remove the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT®.

Topics covered include:

  • pharmacokinetics
  • indications and contraindications (MEC 3/4)  
  • initiation in a patient centred framework
  • management of common side effects of Implanon NXT® including troublesome bleeding

Participants will have the opportunity to simulate the correct insertion and removal technique on a model arm.

Entry requirements / eligibility

Medical Practitioner, nurse, nurse practitioner or midwife and have current medical registration with the AHPRA. 

Adequate professional indemnity insurance is required and is the sole responsibility of the participant. 

Nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives who do not have experience with local anaesthetic administration or contraceptive counselling are invited to express their interest to complete this course via education@fpnsw.org.au. They may be suitable for the Implanon NXT® insertion and removal training for nurses and midwives, by invitation.

Learning outcomes

1. Apply knowledge of Implanon NXT® in a patient centred framework
2. Identify and manage common side effects of Implanon NXT®
3. Demonstrate the safe and effective insertion of the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT®
4. Demonstrate the safe and effective removal of the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT®

Course structure

Face to face workshop

1.5 hour face to face session

Contraceptive implant (Implanon NXT®) insertion and removal training for healthcare professionals is a stand-alone course or can comprise a core module of the Implanon NXT ®insertion and removal training for nurses and midwives, by invitation.

Assessment

Formative assessment will be incorporated in the training including simulation practice on model arms.

However, we recommend that participants seek supervision in their practice to gain confidence and competence in live insertions and removals. We will provide certification that the participant has attended the course but each participant is responsible for ensuring they feel confident and competent before attempting insertion or removal procedures unsupervised.
