Reproductive and Sexual Health in the Australian Context

Who would benefit from this course

International Medical Graduates with limited experience of reproductive and sexual health in Australia, who have recently gained Australian registration or who are awaiting registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Course description

This two-day course is designed for international medical graduates with limited experience in reproductive and sexual health in the Australian setting.

The course includes up-to-date lecture presentations on communication and sexual history taking, contraception, STIs, menopause and unintended pregnancy, followed by a case study session and an optional observational clinic at Family Planning NSW.

For participants with current medical registration and medical indemnity insurance, you are eligible to attend a cervical screening workshop . 


Scholarships covering tuition fees are available for this course.  Applying for a scholarship does not secure a place in the course. Registering and paying in full will secure course entry for eligible applicants. Successful scholarship recipients will be refunded their course fees. Scholarship applications for the February 2019 intake are now closed.

Entry requirements / eligibility

Medical practitioners with current Medical Board of Australia registration or medical practitioners applying for the registration are eligible for this course.

Learning outcomes

Gain working knowledge of resources for managing sexually transmissible infections

Achieve competence in the understanding of legal issues and responsibilities in reproductive and sexual health

Improve on own practice limitations and knowledge of contraceptive options available

Course structure

Pre-course activities


Pre-course reading and activities distributed three weeks before the course date

2-day course 9.00am-5.00pm

Face-to-face course – compulsory attendance

For participants with current Australian medical registration and medical indemnity insurance only


Observation clinical session

One session at a Family Planning NSW clinical centre to be undertaken within three months of the course date

Cervical Screening Upskilling

This workshop will be offered in conjunction with Doctors IMG - Reproductive & Sexual Health in the Australian Context.

This practical workshop is designed for health professionals wishing to improve their knowledge, improve their skills and gain clinical experience in cervical screening.

The course is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. There are no course fees for health professionals working in NSW.  Information will be sent to course participants prior to the course.
