Course description

A one day course for primary and secondary teachers who deliver sexual health and relationships education (SHRE) to students with an intellectual disability. Strategies for teaching positive self-esteem, relationship skills, positive sexuality and safety are presented. Topics covered include sexuality model, myths and barriers and their impact on people with disability, curriculum scoping and sequencing, answering challenging questions, teaching strategies and working with families. Participants will also have the opportunity to view and use a range of SHRE resources.

Developed in consultation with NSW Department of Education & Communities and aligned with the Life Skills module of the NSW PDHPE syllabus.

Entry requirements / eligibility

Applicants must have prior work experience teaching students with disability.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of training participants will be able to:

  • Explore myths & barriers that impact on the right to sexual health and relationships education (SHRE) for students with intellectual disability
  • Increase skills in developing a sexual heatlh and relationships education program in line with the NSW Education Standards Authority's (NESA) PDHPE syllabus
  • Explore a range of teaching tools, resources and strategies that can be used in the delivery of SHRE
  • Increase knowledge of stategies for working with parents/carers
  • Apply a whole of school approach to SHRE

Completing the Sexual Health Education for Life: the PDHPE Curriculum for students with disability course will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing standard descriptors 1.1.2, 1.6.2, 4.3.2, 2.2.2, 1.1.2, 4.5.2 and 3.7.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
