Course description

This course will enable teachers of years 5-8 students (Stages 3-4) to build on existing knowledge and increase confidence in answering challenging questions around puberty, relationships and sexual health using a holistic approach.

  • Build on existing knowledge of sexuality and sexual health education
  • Identify and explore current sexual health issues for young people
  • Increase confidence with new strategies for answering challenging questions
  • Locate recommended resources for teachers and students
  • Gain 6 hours of NESA Registered PD

Entry requirements / eligibility

This course is suitable for teachers, pre-service teachers, professional development coordinators casual teachers and others who work with year 5-8 (stages 3-4) students.

Learning outcomes

Learn how to:

  • Define sexual health using a holistic framework
  • Model best practice in addressing sexual health group agreement and questions
  • Communicate key messages around puberty, relationships, sexuality and gender diversity, and STIs
  • Demonstrate a range of sexual health education activities appropriate for use with years 5-8

We will also be scheduling a series of sessions in the Nepean-Blue Mountains Local Health District region and other NSW locations in 2018.

NSW ESA Completing the Sexual Health Education: Working It Out course will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing standard descriptors 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.5.2, 4.1.2 and 4.3.2 from the Australian Professional standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
