Volunteering for research studies

Some of the research studies at Family Planning NSW rely on volunteers. By volunteering for a study you are participating in important research that may result in new treatments, improvements in the delivery of health care services, or increased knowledge of reproductive and sexual health.

What is a research study?

Research studies help us find answers to health-related questions. These include prevention of disease, maintenance of good health and the delivery of health services to many different groups of people.

Some research studies involve interviews, surveys or focus groups. Others are designed to focus on testing the benefits and side effects of a new drug or device. All our research studies are approved by the Family Planning NSW Ethics Committee.

Why volunteer?

Benefits of participating in research may include:

  • receiving up-to-date medical information about sexual and reproductive health issues
  • obtaining new health information about yourself
  • helping improve the health of others, now or in the future
  • receiving free contraception (dependent on study)

What's involved in volunteering?

If you are interested in joining a research study, we will first describe the risks and benefits, and try to answer all your questions. We will ask you to sign a consent form to indicate your informed choice to participate. You will have the right to withdraw from the study at any time.

Some questions you may want to ask when considering participation in a study are:

  • What is the purpose of the study?
  • Who is sponsoring the study?
  • How long will I have to participate?
  • What are the possible benefits and risks to me?
  • What kind of treatment or intervention will I be given?
  • Will my personal details remain confidential?

There is no cost to volunteers to participate in a study.
