Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Improving the reproductive and sexual health (RSH) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a priority area at Family Planning NSW.

We engage with Aboriginal Health Workers and community members through various education, health promotion and clinical programs.

We work to create opportunities, share resources and partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and health services.

We meet with communities, build partnerships and respond to local needs. We also offer training for health professionals and youth workers who wish to support the reproductive and sexual health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We are committed to ensuring better access to reproductive and sexual health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our five fixed clinics are located in Dubbo, Newcastle, Penrith, Fairfield and Newington; across Wiradjuri, Awabakal, Darug, Cabrogal and Wann-gal lands.

We offer:

  • Aboriginal health worker training through our Yarning About Sexuality course to increase the capacity of Aboriginal health workers to provide RSH information to individuals and communities
  • A safe and private space for young people to talk about RSH through our Strong Family Program. We work with Elders, young people and communities to help them better understand their RSH choices
  • "Yarning About ..." resources. This series providing information and conversations on RSH topics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of different ages and life stages
  • Clinics with a safe space to talk about RSH with our clinicians
