Position summary

Reporting to the Marketing Manager and Media Advisor, the Communications and Marketing Officer role will support the development and implementation of all of Family Planning NSW’s communications, marketing, media and social media activities.

The role demands a dynamic individual with proven experience in marketing and communications and excellent interpersonal and writing skills.

In addition, a proven ability to prepare documentation that builds the profile of the organisation and delivers quantifiable results, while being sensitive to key issues and sensitivities, is paramount.


Working within the Communications and Marketing team, the Communications and Marketing Officer role is responsible for:

  • the development of media materials, including media releases, key message documents and media lists
  • responding and actioning incoming media requests, while identifying and fostering relationships with key media to support FPNSW’s organisational goals
  • implementing the media plan for the organisation as advised by the Media Advisor, including coordinating media pitches, content distribution and media monitoring and analysis post campaign
  • developing and maintaining ongoing content for FPNSW’s social media channels, utilising a social media calendar to ensure success of the channels
  • monitoring social media platforms and advising the Media Adviser of critical or sensitive issues as they arise
  • the development and approval of ongoing content to be used across all the organisation’s platforms and publications in the organisation’s voice and style
  • performing the organisation’s media monitoring and identify opportunities and risks for the organisation
  • managing and updating the EDM calendar, actioning internal and external eDM campaigns as required
  • ensuring the regular external eDM updates required by the organisation’s contractual obligations are written and sent in accordance with the EDM calendar to relevant stakeholders
  • supporting the Marketing Manager in implementing the marketing plans for the organisation
  • supporting the Marketing Manager in the development and delivery of marketing collateral required to meet FPNSW organisational needs
  • other tasks as required.

Essential criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (media, marketing, communications, journalism, arts);
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills (please provide two examples of written work on any platform with your application);
  • Demonstrated experience in organisational social media communication and/or digital marketing, including the ability to use social media tools as part of communication, media and marketing strategies;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and curating a social media calendar, schedule and strategy
  • An understanding of media relations, media strategies, and the development of media releases and key messages documents
  • An understanding of marketing and communications strategies, including audience segmentation and demonstrated  ability to deliver relevant strategies;
  • An ability to work to deadlines and manage competing priorities;

Desirable criteria

  • Basic graphic design skills.
