Sexual Health Education: Working it Out

Course description

Are you responsible for delivering sexual health education?

Do challenging questions from students make you sweat?

Are you interested in holistic approaches to teaching about sexuality?

Do you need ideas for updating your units of work?

Are you looking for fresh strategies and resources?

This one day course will enable teachers of year 5-8 students (Stages 3-4) to build on existing knowledge of sexuality and sexual health education and increase confidence in preparing programs and having conversations about puberty, relationships and sexual health using a holistic approach.  Sessions feature hands-on activities, current resources and use evidence-based strategies for effective learning with a focus on creating supportive and inclusive learning environments.

Topics include:

  • Best practice approaches to sexual health education
  • Exploring values and attitudes
  • Puberty
  • Respectful relationships
  • Good sexual health, including STIs
  • Sexual and gender diversity
  • Putting it all into practice and answering challenging questions
  • Recommended resources for teachers and students

Activities are aligned with the NSW PDHPE syllabus. 

This course may also be presented as a series of one or more shorter sessions to meet the needs of schools or regional groups when delivered as an external request. 

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for teachers, pre-service teachers, professional development coordinators, casual teachers and others who work with year 5-8 (stages 3-4) students, particularly those delivering sexual health education or in a wellbeing role.

This course may also be presented as a series of one or more shorter sessions to meet the needs of schools or regional groups when delivered as an external request. 

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Training and experience working with students in years 5-8 or currently working towards a qualification to do so.

Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who attend the whole course will receive a Statement of Attendance.

Participants may choose to log this course as Elective PD  for maintaining  teacher accreditation in NSW.
