Cervical Screening Training with Practice Clients
Course description
This course for doctors, nurses and midwives has been designed to enhance knowledge, technique and confidence in cervical screening. This blended learning course includes self-paced online modules combined with hands-on practical training, delivered by experienced clinical facilitators from Family Planning Australia.
Content includes:
- Updates on the National Cervical Screening Guidelines, with a focus on self-collection
- Human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer
- Communication and history taking skills
- Taking samples
- Case studies
- Practise cervical screening on practice client
Who should attend?
Doctors, nurses, and midwives who want to deepen their understanding of cervical screening and develop practical skills through hands-on experience with a practice client.
Course structure
The course covers theory through online learning and practise through a 4-hour practical workshop. The workshop includes a case studies activity and hands on cervical screening using pelvic models and practice clients led by Family Planning Australia clinicians.
It is essential participants complete 100% of the required online learning before attending the face-to-face workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.
Pre-workshop activities
- Completion of online learning which includes watching pre-recorded videos and reviewing resources
- The online learning will take approximately 3 hours to complete
Face-to-face workshop
- The opportunity for discussion with a focus on changes to self-collection
- Case studies activity
- Practise cervical screening on a practice client
- This learning will take 4 hours to complete
Eligibility / Prerequisite
Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Experience in cervical screening, genital examination and speculum insertion are desirable but not essential.

Recognition / Accreditation
Participants, who complete all the online learning and attend the workshop will be issued with a Statement of Completion.
This education is an approved CPD Activity under the RACGP CPD Program.
