Overview of Study

Methodology

Surveys and telephone interviews (Silverman, 2005, 2006) were combined with discourse analysis (Fairclough 2003, Halliday 1994) to investigate how clients in clinical trials understand the information forms that they are required to read prior to participating in a clinical trial at the Sydney Centre for Reproductive Health Research: Research Division of Family Planning NSW, Ashfield, Sydney. The Ashfield clinic has a linguistically and culturally diverse client population.

Objectives of study

  • To describe and analyse the information forms used in 5 clinical trials at the Ashfield clinic of FPNSW
  • To identify the understandings conveyed and received by clients through a survey and selected follow up interviews
  • To recommend strategies for effective development of information forms based on the results of the research
