Overview of Study

A longitudinal study comparing the reasons for choice and experiences with use of a progestogen-only subdermal implant, a progestogen-releasing intrauterine system and a progestogen injection for contraception in a Family Planning setting.

Objectives of study

To determine the factors which influence women to choose one of the long-acting progestogen-only methods of contraception (either the subdermal implant, the intrauterine system or the intramuscular injection) .

To document the demographic, socioeconomic and sexual and reproductive health characteristics of women using these long-acting methods and determine any differences between the three groups.

To follow the 3 cohorts of women for three years and document their experiences including: satisfaction level with their chosen method; any problems and side-effects encountered; discontinuation and failure rates and, reasons for early discontinuation.
