Amendments To Decriminalisation Bill Opposed By Experts

THE NSW Pro-Choice Alliance - the peak campaign for abortion decriminalisation in NSW, representing over 70 health, legal and community organisations, has announced their firm opposition to proposed amendments to the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill.

The Alliance maintains that all amendments proposed will have a limiting impact on access to services and inappropriately intervene in the professional standards of health workers. The amendments present a worse situation than the status quo. If successful, the amendments would ensure that NSW would have some of the most restrictive laws in the country.

Alliance chair Wendy McCarthy AO said: "removing abortion from the NSW Crimes Act 2019 is the clear goal of the bill currently before NSW Parliament. These amendments are a blatant attempt to obstruct that goal.

"Amendments which seek to specify the facility or the kind of doctor who can help a woman especially present serious issues for women living in rural and regional areas of the state."
