Cervical Screening Training for Midwives
Course description
Are you a midwife who has opportunities to offer cervical screening to your clients? Enhance your knowledge, technique and confidence in cervical screening with this blended learning course comprising online learning and clinical practice workshop led by Family Planning Australia clinicians.
Content includes:
- Updates on the National Cervical Screening Guidelines, including self-collection
- Human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer
- Communication and history taking skills
- Taking samples
- Case studies
- Practise cervical screening on pelvic models
- Simulated practise on practice patients
Who should attend?
Midwives who are required to provide cervical screening.
Course structure
It is essential participants complete 100% of the required online learning before attending the webinar and face-to-face workshop to gain critical knowledge and ensure full participation during the course.
The course covers theory through online learning, and practise through a compulsory 2-hour webinar via Zoom which includes a case studies activity and history taking activity as well as a 3-hour face-to-face workshop led by Family Planning Australia clinicians.
Pre-workshop activities
- Completion of online learning which includes watching pre-recorded videos and reviewing resources
- The online learning will take approximately 3-4 hours to complete
- Completion of a compulsory 2-hour webinar via Zoom will take place before the face-to-face workshop
Face-to-face workshop
- Practise cervical screening on pelvic models
- Simulated practise on practice patients
- This learning will take 3 hours to complete
Eligibility / Prerequisite
Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
You must work in NSW to be eligible to attend the course.
Adequate professional indemnity insurance is required and is the sole responsibility of the participant.
Assessment
At the workshop, participants are required to demonstrate competency in communication skills, history taking and cervical screening testing.
Course cost
This course is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW. There are no course fees for midwives working in NSW.
Recognition / Accreditation
Participants, who complete all the online learning, attend the workshop and successfully complete the assessment requirements will be issued with a Statement of Completion.
This course is equivalent to 8 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
