Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Vision Statement on engaging Aboriginal communities

Family Planning NSW is the state’s leading provider of reproductive and sexual health services. We are committed to improving the reproductive and sexual health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within NSW. Family Planning NSW believes that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the right to access reproductive and sexual health services that are affordable, acceptable and appropriate.

Family Planning NSW provides a range of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Our engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is based on cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity and cultural safety.

Over the last 20 years Family Planning NSW has been dedicated to developing partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Services across diverse settings to ensure clinical services, health promotion activities and our education and training packages are responding to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities effectively. We place equal importance on the process of engagement, consultation and inclusivity of service provision as we do on the reproductive and sexual health outcomes experienced in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

To ensure we demonstrate cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity and cultural safety Family Planning NSW has developed the following strategies to ensure our engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is holistic and respectful.
