NSW Parliament has rejected the Abortion Law Reform (Sex Selection Prohibition) Bill 2025. The decision by the NSW Upper House to reject the Bill supports existing NSW legislation which recognises abortion as healthcare and prohibits sex selective abortions for non-medical reasons.

The decision underlines the rightful identification of abortion as healthcare, a woman's right to have an abortion in NSW and the ability of healthcare workers to provide this care.

This vote is in line with the expectations of NSW community. We know most people support a woman's right to choose. Polling consistently shows strong support for access to abortion across NSW.

It is reassuring that measures which could recriminalise abortion care and undermine safe, equitable and timely access were rejected.

Criminalising any aspect of abortion care is an attack on women's health and the doctors and nurses caring for them.

The Abortion Law Reform Act 2019, was introduced to decriminalise abortion and to protect women and health workers.

This Bill was a familiar strategy from the anti-abortion playbook attempting to chip away at women's reproductive rights bit by bit.
