3 - Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives - Full Certificate (RSH-CAP)
Course description
This course is designed for nurses and midwives aiming to take on an extended clinical role as practitioners in the specialty of reproductive and sexual health. It is suitable for those who are working, or wish to work in general practice, family planning, sexual health, HIV/ AIDS, women's health, drug and alcohol, gynaecology, midwifery, youth and corrective services.
The theory component is offered over a five month period. It comprises self-paced online learning which includes: pre-reading, online activities, compulsory interactive live case studies sessions and viewing pre-recorded lectures.
Theory content includes:
- Cervical screening
- Contraception
- History taking
- Pregnancy options
- Reproductive health and the law
- Sexually transmissible infections (STIs)
- Trans and gender diverse individuals
- Other topics in the area of reproductive and sexual health
The clinical placement component requires participants to attend a clinical skills workshop to develop competence in essential clinical practical skills. Participants will then meet core competencies across a 32-hour placement. Working with our experienced clinical instructors across our clinics, course participants will gain hands-on experience with a range of reproductive and sexual health presentations.

Registered nurses, enrolled nurses and midwives who wish to function in an extended clinical role as a practitioner in the specialty of reproductive and sexual health.
Course structure
The Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives - Full Certificate course is structured with the following activities:
Online learning
Participants will complete their online learning using the Moodle platform on a weekly basis following the recommended timeline. It is compulsory that participants complete 100% of the required online learning activities in Moodle.
Compulsory Webinars
There are five live interactive compulsory webinars offered in the course. Participants must complete the required case study activity prior to each webinar and must attend each webinar.

Clinical Skills Workshop
Participants are required to complete their clinical placement within 12 months of completing the theory component of the Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives - Full Certificate.
Before commencing their clinical placement booking, participants must attend a clinical skills workshop in-person. This workshop focusses on key skills in history taking, cervical screening, speculum skills, and understanding of contraceptives.
Clinical Placement Clinicians must book in their clinical placement days before attending the workshop, where they must accumulate a total of 32 hours. During this placement, participants must demonstrate competency in core skills. Alternate arrangements will be made with the Clinical Education team if participants are unable to demonstrate competency.
Placement Booking Instructions
To book your clinical placement dates, follow these steps:
- Select your preferred location below.
- Select a suitable appointment time and book as a New Patient.
- Once you have submitted your initial booking, choose your remaining dates with the same account.
- Ensure your bookings reach a total of 32 hours.
- Confirm your attendance by responding to the text reminders sent by HotDoc.
Eligibility / Prerequisite
Registered nurses and midwives will need to:
- Hold current unconditional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- Have 12 months post-registration experience
- Have completed the theoretical component within the last 12 months
Enrolled nurses will need to:
- Be employed in the general practice, sexual, reproductive or women's health environment, where another practitioner (either Registered Nurse or doctor) has skills and knowledge in reproductive and sexual health and can provide clinical support where required.
Assessment
To successfully complete the course, participants are expected to participate in al activities, including:
Theory Component
- Attend 5 interactive webinar sessions via Zoom
- Complete all self-paced online learning content
- Submit two online assessment tasks
- Write and submit one critical analysis case study assessment
- Complete the open book exam with a passing grade
Please note the theory takes a minimum 88 hours to complete, which equates to approximately 5.5 hours of work per week. The hours per week will vary depending on when assessment tasks are due. Some participants may find they need to spend longer to complete the course.
Clinical Placement Component
- Attend a clinical skills workshop
- Attend clinical placement that is at least 32 hours in duration
- Demonstrate competencies in essential reproductive and sexual health skills
Course cost
$2870.00
Recognition / Accreditation
Participants who successfully complete all assessment requirements will be issued with a certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives - Full Certificate.
This course is equivalent to 120 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
