5 - Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives - Clinical Placement (RSH-CAP)
Course description
Family Planning Australia provides clinical skills workshop and supervised clinical placements for the Reproductive and Sexual Health - Clinical Accreditation Program for nurses and midwives.
The clinical placement requires participants to attend a clinical skills workshop day to demonstrate their understanding of essential practical skills. Participants will then meet core competencies across a 32-hour placement. In conjunction with our experienced clinical instructors in Newington, Penrith, Hunter, and Fairfield, course participants will gain hands-on experience with the appropriate range of reproductive and sexual health issues required to complete your course. This includes history taking, contraception, cervical screening, STIs, pregnancy options, and men's health.
Who should attend?
This placement is only available to registered nurses and midwives who have completed the Reproductive and Sexual Health - Clinical Accreditation Program theory component within the last 12 months.
Course structure
Registration
Participants who have recently completed the theory component will be invited to register for the course. The registration process includes participants booking in their clinical placement to ensure they can meet the requirements of the workshop.
Clinical Skills Workshop
Before commencing their clinical placement booking, participants must attend a Clinical Skills Workshop in-person. This workshop focusses on key skills in history taking, cervical screening, speculum skills, and understanding of contraceptives.

Clinical Placement
Following the workshop, clinicians can book their own clinical placement days, where they must accumulate a total of 32 hours. Participants must complete the clinical placement within 3 months of attending the workshop. During this placement, participants must demonstrate competency in core skills. Alternate arrangements will be made with the Clinical Education team if participants are unable to demonstrate competency.
Placement Booking Instructions
To book your clinical placement dates, follow these steps:
- Select your preferred location below.
- Select a suitable appointment time and book as a New Patient.
- Once you have submitted your initial booking, choose your remaining dates with the same account.
- Ensure your bookings reach a total of 32 hours.
- Confirm your attendance by responding to the text reminders sent by HotDoc.
Eligibility / Prerequisite
Nurses and midwives will need to:
- Hold current unconditional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- Have 12 months post-registration experience
Have completed the theoretical component within the last 24 months
Assessment
To successfully complete the course, participants are expected to participate in all activities, including:
- Attend a clinical skills workshop day
- Attend a clinical placement that is at least 32 hours in duration
- Demonstrate core competency in essential reproductive and sexual health skills according to the competency record book
Course cost
$840.00
Recognition / Accreditation
Participants who successfully complete all assessment requirements will be issued with a Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health – Clinical Accreditation Program: Clinical Placement.
This course is equivalent to 36 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
