Primary school teachers and executives, pre-service teachers, undergraduates of education and social work, local health professionals and allied health workers.

Course description

This six-hour course is designed for primary school teachers and others who work with primary school children.  The course examines the values and attitudes that underpin education in reproductive and sexual health, enabling participants to experience practical teaching and learning strategies to engage students, and to critically reflect on their current programs and practice

Entry requirements / eligibility

Applicants must be trained, or undertaking training, in programming or educating in the K-6 syllabus.

Learning outcomes

  • To identify the need for the provision of education in reproductive and sexual health
  • To apply the health promoting framework to create a holistic approach to teaching and learning in reproductive and sexual health
  • To identify the impact of values and attitudes
  • To allow participants to assess and experience a range of practical teaching and learning strategies, and implement these in current practice
  • To improve and develop participant skills in reproductive and sexual health education

NSW ESA Completing Beyond the Birds & Bees course will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing standard descriptors 1.2.2, 1.4.2, 1.6.2, 2.1.2, 2.3.2, 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.5.2, 3.7.2, 4.1.2, 4.3.2, and 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
