Beyond the Nuts and Bolts

Who would benefit from this course

Educators who work within the scope of growth and development of students in years 7-12, including teachers and executives, PDHPE teachers, pre-service teachers, undergraduates of education and social work, health professionals and allied health workers.

Course description

This six-hour course is designed for secondary school teachers and others working with young people in secondary schools who wish to improve their knowledge, understanding and skills to address reproductive and sexual health. 

The workshop examines the values and attitudes that underpin education in reproductive and sexual health.  Participants experience practical teaching and learning strategies to engage students, and critically reflect on their current programs to improve practice with health consumerism.  Focus is on empowering young people to make informed decisions on their attitudes and behaviours, and to understand the consequences and impact it has on reproductive and sexual health.

Entry requirements / eligibility

Applicants must be trained, or undertaking training, in programming or educating in the 7-12 syllabus.

Learning outcomes

  • To identify the need for knowledge of reproductive and sexual health, and enable participants to apply this in the provision of education
  • To explore the current issues for young people
  • To provide answers to challenging questions

Session 1: Introduction to sexuality and sexual health; Best practice approaches to sexual health education

Session 2: Exploring values and attitudes; Respectful relationships

Session 3: Puberty; Sexually Transmissible Infections; Contraception

Session 4: Gender and sexual diversity; Putting it all into practice and answering challenging questions

4 sessions x 1.5 hours  (3.30pm - 5.00pm)
