Sexual Safety Policy Training for Mental Health Professionals

Who would benefit from this course

Mental health professionals employed at NSW Health mental health services.  This includes Nurses, Doctors, Allied Health Professionals, Consumer (Peer) Support Workers and Aboriginal Health Workers that are based in a NSW Health Mental Health Service.  The training has been developed for all service areas including acute inpatient, rehabilitation and community based services.

Course description

The Sexual Safety Policy Training is mandatory training for all mental health professionals employed at NSW Health mental health services.

Learning outcomes

With a focus on current evidence and skills development, this course will enable you to meet the requirements of PD 2013_038 Sexual Safety - Responsibilities and Minimum Requirements for Mental Health Services:

  • Effectively promote strategies to support sexual safety and prevent sexual assault and harassment
  • Respond appropriately and sensitively to sexual safety issues involving mental health consumers, both within the service environment and within the community
  • Integrate trauma-informed care principles into all aspects of treatment

Course structure

The Sexual Safety Policy Training consists of:

  • HETI eLearning Module One – 1 hour to be completed before attending the workshop and provides and introduction and overview of the guidelines, links between sexual safety and mental health and trauma informed
  • Managers only HETI eLearning Module – 45 minutes. This is an opportunity for Managers to reflect on current progress of implementation and provides access to tools to support audits and reviews at a service level
  • 6 hour workshop at your LHD providing an overview of sexuality and mental health, defining sexual safety incidents, trauma informed care and self-care.
  • eLearning HETI Module Two – 1 hour - putting it into practice: responding to an incident.  Developing a self-care plan

Sexual Safety Policy Training is available now.

There are two parts to the enrolment process for the Sexual Safety Policy Training:

  • Register via HETI online; and
  • Book a place in a face to face training session through the Local Health District training centre.
